Today at Mass, the priest recounted the story of two sisters, Martha and Mary during a visit Jesus made to their home. It’s a familiar story, but one that I was not particularly fond of because I never really understood it.
In case you are unfamiliar with the details, Jesus visits the sisters, and during his visit, Martha runs around trying to prepare and get ready. Mary, on the other hand, simply chills out with Jesus, calmly sitting by his feet. Martha, clearly angry, asks Jesus how he could let her sister sit there doing nothing. Jesus replies to Martha, “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).
Recently, I have been trying to work on building my relationship with the Lord, and have found that stress, worry and trying to prepare and fix everything around me distracts me from where my mind and my soul should be focused – on the Lord. It is so easy to get wrapped up in trying to do what we think is right, like Martha, that we forget that life is about much more than what we do.
What sister do you identify with? Martha or Mary? Please share why! I’m sure others would like to hear.
