The Wedding Jar

June is a wonderful time for weddings – the flowers are fresh and in bloom, the sun is out, the weather is lovely.  So it is no wonder that soon-to-be brides and grooms select it as their month of matrimony.  This June in particular is special because of the wedding celebrations for two of my dear friends – one whom I email on a daily basis, and the other a friend from my days studying in England.

Quite a few people in my generation, as well as the generation above and below, are celebrating this “blessed union of souls” at this point in their life.  I envy them because marriage is such a wonderful thing, and wedding days are such joyful events.  I also have weddings on my mind because the other day my mother found a ceramic wedding jar that my father had bought for me.  The jar is such a sentimental object because my father never had the chance to see me engaged.  He bought the jar in the hopes that my then-boyfriend, now husband, and I would eventually marry.  For me, it’s a symbol that he would have approved…even though he didn’t have the chance to give me away.  It really is a wonderful gift, and one that I feel blessed to have.

For all of my friends, and for all of you, dear readers, who are celebrating marriage this month, congratulations!  If you have any wedding memories of your own to share, please feel free to post them in the comments below.

  1. Couldn’t help but read this and get a tear in my eye. Fill the jar with spare change and use it to celebrate a special occasion or anniversary!
